About

Throughline opened its first juried exhibition, “MAPPING PERSPECTIVES”, in conjunction with the biennial photography festival FOTOFEST HOUSTON. Juried by Samantha Johnston, Executive Director & Curator of the Colorado Photographic Arts Center (CPAC), in Denver, Colorado, the exhibition featured a broad range of lens-based work by artists from across the United States.

The theme of FotoFest was “Critical Geography”, which sought to re-examine traditional Western and historical understandings of geography while expanding these investigations to new realms. In the spirit of this theme, Mapping Perspectives explored power structures, inequalities, and dominant ideologies within and across marked boundaries. Given we live in a world where influence comes from more than geographical coordinates, Mapping Perspectives examined how photographs capture ways in which culture, society, economics, politics, and religion shape our environments.

“Each of the 23 artists in the exhibition”, says Johnston, “offers a unique interpretation of the visible and invisible lines that shape our lived experience -- from the geographical borders between countries to shifting definitions of sexuality, gender, and identity.” She invited viewers, as they navigated Throughline’s gallery, to consider how boundaries shape their own lived experiences. “What measured boundaries are deconstructed when we seek to find the forces that connect us?”
